Principal’s Appreciation of Team Blooms

(Broadcast on PA system after Kalotsav 2012).

Good morning.

This special broadcast is to update you on something our team of Blooms artists and their teachers and art gurus have accomplished.

You must have already heard about the highlights of our trip to participate in the All Kerala CBSE school youth festival, called Kalotsav 2012 held at Sanjose Public School, Choondacherry, near Bharananganam and Palai. We came out placed 5th in terms of points scored from among 338 schools that participated and 108 who found a place on the score board. We scored 265 points, where the top was 479 and the lowest was 1.

Dannet Bennichan scored a double Gold, one in Oil painting and one in Water colour. She had been the only First prize winner from Wayanad Sahodaya complex last year and this year remains the one and only double gold winner from this part of the world.

Katha Kalia came out first in English Recitation. Media in south celebrated her achievement with special reports and my impression is that journalists who were covering the event noticed her special talents. Something we have always known. I would now advise Katha to build up on that talent and be capable of doing her own speeches before we compete again next year. She can then move on to the real big league of real speakers.

Ria Grace Devasia won one of the Kalotsav’s most coveted First prizes. Folk dance is something people associate easily with when it comes to Youth Festivals and fine arts competitions. Therefore it is something in which competition is fierce too. Winning in that is a massive achievement.

Even though the toppers are the most attention getting Blooms, they are by no means our real muscles. The spirit of our school was truly carried by those Blooms who made sure that what they presented was world class. Let me read out a list of our A grade winners.

When we decided to have a go at the All Kerala Meet, we knew there will be winners and losers. We knew there will be disputed results. We knew our quality may not be recognized because of faults that are not ours at all. Typical example was our Western Music team. They had to present their sound bytes into a system that was so pathetic even they couldn’t hear it well. Our former captain Merin J Komban lost out because of judges who could not distinguish between a movie award night presentation and an international climate change meet. Mushthaq in Mappilappattu was placed First, right on top of the list by one judge. Two others pulled him down so badly he wound up with only an A grade and no prize at all.

There were many such examples. Welcome to the real world. One day when you become a judge, make sure you get the specifications and standards right and the ethics well and truly held up.

We must always remember when a school takes on a challenge so massive and have to depend on people outside their direct area of control; minor flaws like these are inevitable. In fact I am left with a great lot of appreciation on the conduct of Kalotsav 2012.

What did we really win for Team Hill Blooms?

There was not one incident that required teacher’s disciplinary intervention. There were no unsafe acts. Not one complaint about food, stay or interpersonal interactions even when we had to live with minimum conveniences and had to eat on the road side.  In other words our children took care of themselves and the team. Our team of students and teachers proved in no uncertain terms that our children,  the Blooms of class 6 to 12 are dependable, mature, near adults who can be trusted with challenges and situations anywhere in the world.  If we can be organized, objective and disciplined at Bharananganam, 400 kms from here, we can do it in Doha, London or North America.

You are truly world class.

Your basic goodness is commendable and inspiring to the entire family of Blooms especially the parents and teachers. I congratulate every single Bloom who participated,  your parents, teachers, art gurus and extended family members for instilling the right values and team spirit in you. I congratulate you for the dignity you have maintained and the good name you have left behind for yourselves, your families and the school.

May the Force of Goodness be with you always.

Thank you.
