HILL BLOOMS SCHOOL

Mananthavady

Dear Madam/Sir,                                                                     21-08-2013

“Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please”…..Mark Twain.

In spite of the massive gap between time frames, cultures and continents, Murugan Kattakkada and Mark Twain together have defined school times for all Blooms! The time to develop skills that would get them to survive all that are antithetical to the concept of Onam and still retain values and memories that might get them to celebrate Onam as a distant but possible Camelot.

So once again with passion on behalf of all Blooms and every one at Hill Blooms:  ഓണാശംസകൾ !

Onam will be celebrated in the school on 13th September with traditional Pookkalamalsaram, Onasadhya, and a Nadan Pattu session. On that day students need not wear uniforms. They may wear a dress of their choice. School will close for Onam holidays on 13th September after the celebration and reopen on September 23rd Monday .

Here is an update on happenings at Hill Blooms.

Here are a few new and old bits and pieces that need sharing and active consideration.

1.      Internet Access:Without access to computers and internet a Bloom just can not function effectively. I would request all parents to provide them with computers and well supervised net access at home. Getting them to use the internet responsibly is a challenge we have to meet that is as important as developing their Math skills and language skills. ‘No internet connectivity at home’, is not a reason, teachers at Hill Blooms are instructed to treat with sympathy anymore. Please get ‘connected’ as soon as children are enrolled in KG at Hill Blooms. Bulk of notes and testing will be through the school website from now on. This will provide a very different approach to home work and all of us, students, parents and teachers will benefit in the long term because of added efficiency and control over the work of our children.

2.      Club Activities:Club activities are part and parcel of CCE and all Blooms must participate. Participation is mandatory in at least 2 (two) clubs, one chosen for a Bloom’s growth as a socially responsible citizen and the other chosen for its contribution to skills development. Currently there are 5 clubs active in Hill Blooms under the leadership of teachers chosen because of their expertise and interests.

(1)   GFC (Green Friends Club): Floated by Blooms of class 5 in 2008. GFC currently has Plastic recycling and Zero waste projects running.

(2)   Literary and Debating Club: Focused on reading, writing and speaking.

(3)   Music Club: The singers and instrument folks.

(4)   Social Service Club: Organized to bring out all that is compassionate in a Bloom.

(5)   Science Club: A club that does things to inspire Blooms who are inclined to reason and observe.

(6)   VSET Blooms: Blooms participating in programs conducted by Vishwa Seva Educational Trust, Hill Blooms’ trusted value teachers.

3.      Review and Reinforcement at Home:Blooms of class 6 and above need 3 to 4 hours of review and home work time at home. If you can’t organize that, well, alternative study streams and career options that do not require such work should be considered at the earliest.

4.      Read A Newspaper! Any Newspaper! Any Lanugage!:Without a habit of that, most of the educational initiatives that are exclusive at Hill Blooms would be alien to your child and therefore sending her to Hill Blooms a poor choice that is mutually inconvenient. No child reads if her parents don’t. It is time for an introspection on this topic and in case of disagreements the least we should do is sitting down and talking about it. Please call me if you are confused about the importance of newspaper reading.

5.      Skill sets do not happen overnight. Adding a musical instrument to the target set is highly recommended and goes a long way when it comes to making their leisure time creative and enjoyable. It also gives them a massive presence among peers.

6.     Sahodaya Kalolsavam:District level Sahodaya Kalolsavam 2013 will be held at two venues in the month of October. Details will be communicated to participants.

7.     Participation in Bloomsday Program:Bloomsday 2013 (school annual day) is tentatively set for December 20th 2013. Just like last year Bloomsday would be a double event with one part held early and followed by the formal session. Doubling Bloomsday is done with the intention of increasing participation for as many Blooms as possible. It is also hoped that parents will find participation less tiring and time consuming. Those students intending to participate in Bloomsday stage programs, are required to give their names to class teachers before 15th October 2013. Cost is estimated to be between Rs.2000 and Rs.2500. Transparent accounting will be maintained by teachers in charge and conveyed to parents.

8.       SA12013-14: SA1Exams for classes 9 and 10 will start on 24th September.

SA1 Exams for Classes 6,7 and 8 will start on 25th September.

SA1 Exams for Classes 1,2,3,4 and 5 will start on 26th September.

Please take note that bus schedule will change only on Thursday, 26th September. On 24th and 25th school bus timings will be as on regular working days starting the return trip at 3 PM. But on 26th to 1st October buses will start their return trip at 12-30 in the afternoon. On 3rd October regular classes will start after the exam and on 3rd October buses will start only at 3PM.
