HILLBLOOMS SCHOOL

(A Senior Secondary School Affiliated to CBSE)

                                                                     Mananthavady

Dear Madam/Sir,                                                                              15-03-2014

The Ides of March are here again! Exams are almost over. School is just about out and times just can’t possibly be any better to look up to the kind of education Mark Twain famously recommended when he said:
“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”!

He must have meant reading.

We better heed.

At Hill Blooms we regard everything else secondary when it comes to the question of education.

All that is good with your child would be enhanced and all that we wanted to change would start changing with a summer of reading.  We wish your child truck loads of reading this summer.

Here is a summing up of things to remember and a few pointers to the year ahead. But first the present immediate.

1.     Summer recess is for all and that includes the Principal and most of the office staff. Those who need Transfer certificates are to put in their requests yesterday (sic) and pick them up before closing on 28th March. Alternately they can wait till Blooms and office staff come out of summer hibernation on 1st May 2014. Please note that this is not applicable to class 10 and class 12 pass outs .Their TC will be distributed only after their results are published by CBSE.

2.     School exams will start on 21st March and on exam days, school buses will start from school at 12-45 PM.

3.     School will close for summer recess on Saturday 28th March. On that day children must bring lunch (or order from the kitchen) and stay at school till   3-30PM for End of Year celebration.  School buses will start their return trip only after 3-30 PM.

4.     Classes 9, 10 & 12 will reopen on 2nd May 2014.

5.     Classes UKG to 8 will reopen on 2nd June 2014.

6.      LKG will start on 4th June 2014.

7.     Fee Remittance and Books Distribution: Schedule for fee remittance and purchasing materials from school store is given in the following table. [Books will be distributed from store only after school fee for academic year 2014-15 is paid either in cash or with dated cheques at the school office]

28th and 29th May are set aside for parents who were away on vacation and could not pick up books on allotted days. However these days are bound to be extremely crowded days and all are advised to make use of their allotted days to pick up books as much as possible.

Parents who have more than one child at the school may choose to pick up books for all their children on the day allotted to the youngest child who is in UKG or above. (LKG days should not be chosen as an alternate day.)

Parents with more than one child at the school may also choose to pick up books on 28th or 29th May which are days set aside for defaulters. Please be warned that these days are likely to be extremely crowded and may cause hours of waiting.

School store will remain open from 9 am to 2 pm. The first half of roll numbers in each class should come before 12 noon and the second half of roll numbers in the afternoon. Since all staff members who manage the store leave in the school bus at 3 PM, parents should avoid coming in after 2 PM.

Store personnel will not entertain requests to pick up books after they close accounts soon after 2PM.

8.     Please make it a point to stick to the given schedule. Store personnel and teachers in-charge may not be able to provide materials if parents and students visit the store on unscheduled dates causing unmanageable crowding. LKG uniform, Class 1 Wednesday Uniform and Class 5 girls’ uniform are the only uniforms that need to be stitched by the school tailor. All other uniform dresses may be stitched by a tailor of your choice. The uniform dress materials will be available in the school store from March 15th 2014 onwards.

9.     Bridge Course: Just like in the year past, a bridge course for students who have just completed class 10 will start on April 15th Monday. Duration of the course is one and a half months. Course fee is Rs 4000. They will be given entrance exams based coaching in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

10.                        Foundation Course: This is open to all who have completed class 7 and would like to reaffirm their mastery of subjects and languages.

11.                         Every year bulk of this letter is focused on what we regard as the single biggest skill we expect a Bloom to acquire by the time she or he reaches class 6. Is the child capable of reading newspapers and things in print that are within the scope of a sixth graders vocabulary and understanding of the world? Fortunately a good number of Blooms are. All are not. Therefore this simple test that you must consider over and above all testing that the school has done and you have so painstakingly followed. Give a front page of your news paper to your child who just finished Class 6 and see if she can pick up basic info from news items that are within the child’s understanding ability. Ask a few simple questions that require only one word answers but need full comprehension of the news item. Do this for a day or two and then let us talk about where to go from here in terms of teaching and learning strategies.

12.                         CBSE has revised its guidelines on total teaching hours in an academic year. The current requirement is 1200 hours of teaching time. To meet this requirement Hill Blooms School will change its work hours to 08-30 AM to 3 PM from academic year 2014-15. This is not applicable to KG students. They have the option to stick to the current start up time of 9 AM if they are dropped at school by parents. Those travelling in school vehicles will get to school early. If they carry packed breakfast it will be served to them before classes begin in KG.

13.                         List of books for reading contest 2014 will be published on the school website.

Let us thank God for all the good things we have shared in the process of getting our children to grow up into young adults of integrity and admirable skills.

May the force of goodness always be with you.

All of us here at Hill Blooms wish you and the family a safe and enjoyable summer of ‘14.
